Lorem ipsum (abbreviated lipsum) is a term for standard pseudo-Latin text used in graphic design and drafting as demonstrative filler text when creating working examples of graphic designs (e.g. lipsum thus provides a working illustration of text in mock-ups before meaningful content is inserted into the finished design.
If meaningful text were used for the same purpose, it would be difficult to evaluate the appearance alone without the observer being seduced into reading the content. If, on the other hand, meaningless but regular text was used (e.g., repeating "asdf asdf asdf..."), the eye would be distracted from judging the appearance by the regular text structure, which differs from regular text. The text of lorem ipsum at first glance resembles regular text, the words are of varying length, the frequency of letters is similar to regular speech, the punctuation looks natural, etc.
